Kirk Cameron's Origin of Species Redux
At first I was going to rip apart Kirk's hare-brained speech (Darwin thought up the big bang theory? Really?!?) but then I found that this young woman has done a much better job than I could ever have. That and her accent combined with her brain makes me harder than Chinese algebra. So enjoy, I know I will.

Quote du Jour
"The most preposterous notion that H. sapiens has ever dreamed up is that the Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of all the Universes, wants the saccharine adoration of His creatures, can be swayed by their prayers, and becomes petulant if He does not receive this flattery. Yet this absurd fantasy, without a shred of evidence to bolster it, pays all the expenses of the oldest, largest, and least productive industry in all history.
The second most preposterous notion is that copulation is inherently sinful."

Atheist Bus Campaign
So I did some research on the Atheist Bus Campaign and low and behold our friend Richard Dawkins is on board.
Excerpted from The LA TImes:
Earlier this month, 800 buses rolled out of depots across Britain plastered with advertisements cheerfully informing people that "there's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."
Sponsored by the British Humanist Assn., the ad campaign is the brainchild of a comedian who had seen Christian messages on buses, looked up the websites of the organizations behind them and found warnings that, as a nonbeliever, she was destined to go to hell.
The new ads have attracted little controversy in Britain, a secular country that finds religious fervor a tad awkward. Perhaps the biggest kerfuffle has been over the word "probably" in the slogan, which the British advertising authority said should be thrown in to keep the ad from being potentially misleading, on the grounds that no one can say with 100% certainty that God does not exist.
The campaign's highest-profile backer is Richard Dawkins, a biology professor at Oxford University and the author of "The God Delusion," a defense of scientifically based atheism that became a bestseller in Britain and the U.S. Dawkins pledged to match donations to the campaign up to $8,250 -- a figure that was quickly reached.
The sad part is that this would never fly in my country, with all our religious freedom and all.

Southern California Ford Dealership Radio Commercial Bashes Atheists
transcript of commercial from The UK Telegraph:
Seriously, and this is in California, a supposedly liberal state--my state.
"Did you know that there are people in this country who want prayer out of schools, "Under God" out of the Pledge, and "In God We Trust" to be taken off our money?
But did you know that 86 per cent of Americans say they believe in God? Since we all know that 86 out of every 100 of us are Christians, who believe in God, we at Kieffe & Sons Ford wonder why we don't tell the other 14 per cent to sit down and shut up.
I guess I just offended 14 per cent of the people who are listening to this message. Well, if that is the case then I say that's tough, this is America folks, it's called free speech.
None of us at Kieffe & Sons Ford is afraid to speak out. Kieffe & Sons Ford on Sierra Highway in Mojave and Rosamond, if we don't see you today, by the grace of God, we'll be here tomorrow."
Seriously, and this is in California, a supposedly liberal state--my state.

Soldier Sues Army, Saying His Atheism Led to Threats
Excerpted from The New York Times:
Emphasis by editor.
Complaints include prayers “in Jesus’ name” at mandatory functions, which violates military regulations, and officers proselytizing subordinates to be “born again.” After getting the complainants’ unit and command information, Mr. Weinstein said, he calls his contacts in the military to try to correct the situation.
“Religion is inextricably intertwined with their jobs,” Mr. Weinstein said. “You’re promoted by who you pray with.”
Specialist Hall came to atheism after years as a Christian. He was raised Baptist by his grandmother in Richlands, N.C., a town of fewer than 1,000 people. She read the Bible to him every night, and he said he joined the Army “to make something of myself.”
“I thought going to Iraq was right because we had God on our side,” he said in an interview near Fort Riley.

Richard Dawkins' response to a Liberty University red herring on Quantum Theory vs. Religion
The poster of the Youtube video is a fundie and flips the question of not being able to prove the existence of God on the reader themselves. Of course, I had to respond:
Fundamentalist Jack Off: Essentially what he's saying in this video is, in a complicated manner, "you can't prove that god exists".
I'd like to pose this question as an intellectual challenge - Prove that you exist. Prove someone else exists in the same fashion.
Mildly Brilliant:I responded to your post, that is proof I exist. If you wish me to prove you exist, show up on my doorstep and I will bitchslap you; the pain you experience will be an affirmation of life. Now let's see how long it takes God to respond to this post. Oops... there goes that argument.
It is amazing how easy it is to cut through mental masturbation in just three senstences... Then again, the argument is that God exists outside of time so He probably get really confused when reading blogs and this might take a while. [/sarcasm]

Penn & Teller on "Intelligent Design"
This is an excellent episode of "Bullshit" starring Penn & Teller. Watch as they prove time after time that Intelligent Design is not a theory, and that proponents of said "theory" don't even really understand what a theory is.
